I really like Japanese punk because it’s so different from the hateful, boring, festering boys’ club that American punk almost always has been and Ging Nang Boyz (and Going Steady) are the prime example of that for me. their lyrics are all about friendship and love and appreciating life and being pure of heart as fuck all of the time and their metaphors and comparisons are “corny” but they sing them, scream them, put their hearts into them, w/o any shred of shame or hesitation and it’s just amplified seeing their mid-tour antics and completely nuts live shows (see video)
their songs are written like heartfelt poems by a teenager who’s too embarrassed to show them to anybody and performed by a bunch of guys who are like the avatars of the secret, uninhibited, unembarrassed self that that same hypothetical teenager, and all young people, knows they have inside them and wants to let loose. and that’s what makes them so fucking good and genuine and inspiring and important to me. that’s what makes GNB my favorite band
Confession time: I’m on of those poopieheads that absolutely hates the term “neo-heisei”
….Okay, me too. I didn’t realize it before but reading Mura’s post made me realize how much I hate it. /o\
High five? :D
crawls over and high fives annechan and mura
welcome to the club, we have…exasperation? Hoppers? ; v ; /
Want something really aggravating? In the early 2000’s when the internet was still young territory for this fandom, some people got together and decided to relabel the eras for Rider shows. So the way it worked is that 1 through Stronger were “Generation 1”, Sky-Black RX were “Generation 2”, Shin-J were “Generation 3”, and Kuuga-onward were “Generation 4”. This wouldn’t be so bad if not for the logic behind this supplanting Showa/Heisei designations being, and I quote:
"But Black looks nothing like Kamen Rider X"
It got even worse when some elitists tried to say that everything from 1-Black/Black RX as the “Ishinomori Generation/Era” and that everything from Shin or Kuuga onward didn’t count as Kamen Rider because “it had drifted away from Ishinomori’s original dream”. Oh did I mention that there were people who also tried to insist that Godzilla didn’t count as Tokusatsu? Yeah, it was a huge mess.
Thankfully, people like myself, my quasi-local friends in the fandom, and some choice allies in arms were persistent about canceling that madness and eventually, people came ‘round.
That said, I still have no idea where the heck calling Rider 1 Ichigo suddenly came from. I’m the guy that cringes whenever I hear that from English-speaking fans since I’d grown up calling him Rider 1 :|
A new teaser has been released for Takashi Miike’s teen survival thriller “As the Gods Will” (out Nov 15, 2014).
The film stars Sota Fukushi as a 2nd-year high school student named Shun Takawata who lives an ordinary teenage life until one day he’s suddenly forced to participate in a series of children’s games such as “Daruma-san ga Koronda” with death as the penalty for losing. Other cast members include Hirona Yamazaki, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mio Yuki, Shota Sometani, Nao Omori, and Lily Franky.
EVERYONE. RUN. RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM EVERYTHING.
WEIRD TAKASHI MIIKE IS BACK WITH PEOPLE’S HEADS EXPLODING FROM GAMES OF “RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT” AND HOLY SHIT WE’RE DOOMED.
Truefax, I ended up getting a job at Suncoast during the tail-end of their lifespan before the bankruptcy and buyout. Because I was the only one who knew about the stuff the crazy kids with cat-ears wanted, I was dubbed the Emissary of the Anime Section and was charged with staying and helping people there during holiday and Black Friday dates.
Highlights include having the ending of BUBBLEGUM CRISIS/CRASH spoiled by a guy who thought EVANGELION was an 80s show, having to tell people to get up off the ground and buy those issues of Newtype USA if they really wanted them that badly, the time we found out that a school in town ran a black market Pocky operation out of one of their bathrooms, being one of the only people to exploit their employee discount on purchasing both Vol. 1 THE FUCCONS and the ARMORED TROOPER VOTOMS Ammo Tin Set in the same week, and drumming on people with my KAMEN RIDER HIBIKI henshin belt as a punishment for bombing the Anime Day trivia contest.
Oh, and that one time when I shooed some kids out of the adult section and yelled “IT’S NOT ALL THAT GREAT ANYWAYS!” as they left the store.
